PT screw proves its worth to defence engineers

An increasing number of manufacturing companies contracted to develop intricate security and defence applications are turning to EJOT's Delta PT screw for its high strength and highly advanced thread forming properties.

The shrinking design proposition

Traditionally, manufacturing for such applications has relied almost entirely on conventional nut and bolt engineering which has served its purpose reliably. However, as theatre demands more and more from modern technologies, then inevitably application assemblies need to become smaller, without compromising strength. This poses designers problems and they are faced with making compromises in materials to combat the knock on cost implication of multi-part assemblies.

The design of EJOT's Delta PT originates from automotive assembly design and was specially developed for screw joints in thermoplastic materials. The thread geometry creates low surface pressure and provides for a high clamp force within the finished assembly.

It is evolution of these properties that has placed EJOT's application engineers in a position to promote the screws values to designers who have been challenged to meet the size versus strength issues highlighted. Typical examples include companies manufacturing proximity sensors in armaments and also personnel camera monitoring systems.

Realtime solutions

One such company found themselves forced to consider a 2mm requiring an insert of 6mm diameter plus boss of 10mm diameter. Once clamping loads were established, calculations proved that because the Delta Pt fully engaged in the thread that it was forming EJOT was able to provide a 1.6mm Delta PT that not only withstood vibration more efficiently but reduced the boss diameter

down to just 4mm.

Another result of using this method meant that when conductivity trials were made, any electro static discharge stopped at the screw as the plastic bosses operated as an insulator thus effectively protecting the electronic components.
