Fasteners for motors in Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) may have a history stretching back to the early 1800s, but it has only been in the last 30 years that a series of technological breakthroughs have made them a viable alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Being able to build safe and practical electric vehicles, which have batteries capable of providing enough power for the driver to achieve an acceptable range without adding significant weight, is a challenge that manufacturers across the world are overcoming extremely effectively. And this is going to play a major role in reducing CO2 emissions globally and help governments achieve success in their policies to phase out petrol and diesel power in the majority of cases.

One of the ways the equilibrium is being achieved is by utilising new types of fastening technology. This has been an important facilitator of change in the automotive industry for several decades because it has enabled thinner and lighter materials to be used in vehicle construction without compromising strength and safety. Initially this helped to meet fuel efficiency goals in ICE vehicles, and today it is unlocking the potential for vehicles powered by electric motors.

EJOT has been at the forefront of the ICE to EV shift through our range of automotive screws and fastening systems capable of securely joining many different types of plastics, composites and thin sheet metals. Meaning the EJOT range consists of many automotive fasteners, such as; plastic screws for cars, Torx screws for cars and plastic fasteners for cars. In the context of electric motors, our automotive fasteners can help achieve secure attachments in lightweight materials to prevent unnecessary weight gain to the vehicle as a whole.

The electric motor is the amongst the most important parts of any EV. In recent years, the design and engineering of motors has changed and moved forward with the new technologies that surround it – but size and weight still being major influences on design.

In tandem with these design characteristics, the EV industry continues to seek rationalisation of parts so any automotive fastener that has the versatility to replace several different screws in a single assembly is extremely attractive to designers. So, if you are seeking standardisation of parts and parts reduction overall, coupled with simpler installation, EJOT can help.

EJOT screws can transform the approach to the assembly of electric motors in EVs, particularly the EJOT EVO PT screw. This is a self-tapping fastener for thermoplastics with excellent connection properties which features an innovative forming thread to create a torque curve during the installation phase, almost independently of the screw-in depth. This means it provided a uniform tightening torque that can be used in the production at different screw lengths.

Another EJOT fastener that is becoming increasingly attractive in EV motor assembly is the ALtracs Plus. This self-tapping screw for light metal is ideal for use with aluminium, facilitating the use of smaller and shorter screws, but with consistently high strength values, high clamp loads and long term stability, even under high dynamic and thermal stress.

Whether you require fixings for the internal components of the motor or a method for joining the outer casing, EJOT has the solution.

And EJOT also provides ALtra CALC and EVO CALC prognosis software to help designers from the initial development phase to select the correct product. Both have the potential to save time and costs during the development process.
